Sho-in, Sasunoma and the Garden of Shuri Castle

Historic sitesHistoryShuri Castle Park

In Shuri Castle, the second largest wooden work restoration next to the Seiden (Main Hall) was performed on Sho-in and Sasunoma. These buildings stand on the the ground with a height that is the same as the second floor of Nanden (South Hall), connecting with Nanden via a corridor. Contrasting with the Seiden which has a glittering style, Sho-in and Sasunoma are of a more relaxed style in which the buildings and the garden are blended in harmony, and visitors can recall to mind the daily office work of the king in olden days. The national government designated Sho-in, Sasunoma and the Garden a place of scenic beauty in 2009.

Sho-in is a building located in the back of the Nanden building which is positioned on the right hand side of the Shuri Seiden (Main Hall). This is where kings performed daily office work. There is a tea room called Uchironoma in the back and the king or a prince used this room to serve tea to close friends on informal occasions, differing from formal ceremonies at Seiden. Sasunoma and the Garden, on the other hand, is a place where princes were stationed and entertained governmental officials. Even today, visitors to Sasunoma can enjoy jasmine tea and sweets for a fee. Both Sho-in and Sasunoma were reconstructed in 2007. The Basic frame is made of Podocarp. Tsugite and Shiguchi techniques (techniques to connect members) are used for structural members of the building. It infers that reproduction was conducted faithfully down to the last details.
