The Okinawa Postal Service started from the Ryukyu Han (clan), celebrating its 120th anniversary, in 1992, and in 1994, the "Okinawa Communications Museum" was opened. It is known as OKICMM and operated by the Japan Post.
The museum displays postal history and materials, as well as Ryukyu stamps that were issued over 24 years during the Ryukyu government era (1948 - 1972) until Okinawa was returned to mainland Japan.
