- During the Battle of Okinawa, student corps called Tekketsu Kinnoutai were organized with 5th, 4th, and 3rd year students of Okinawa Prefectural Daiichi Junior High School. They were assigned to 5th Artillery Force and several hundred of them lost their lives during the battle.
The monument is built on the site of Yoshuryo dormitory of the Okinawa Prefectural Daiichi Junior High School. Graduation ceremony for 5th and 4th year students was held under the heavy battle in 1945 on this site.
