This is the site of the former administrative office of Mawashi Magiri, a unit of government jurisdiction used from the Kingdom Era through 1907.
Located to the southwest of Shuri, Mawashi was initially a large Magiri including the Naha area. With the establishement of Kume Village and Oroku Magiri, the number of villages in Mawashi Magiri shrunk to 12 by the Kingdom Era.
The Mawashi Magiri Banjo (administrative office) was located in Uema Village. Magiri officials, led by the Jitude (local load), supervised and provided guidance on farming and tax payment.
With the establishment of Okinawa Prefecture in 1879, the Banjo changed its name to Yakuba (village office), and Magiri officials were reorganized into Magiri chiefs and clerks. In 1908, Mawashi Magiri became Mawashi Village.
In 1926 Mawashi Magiri Banjo was relocated to Kokuba and rebuilt as the Village Office. When Mawashi Village merged with Naha City, in 1957, the building became the Mawashi Branch of the Naha City Hall.
